Exhibiting through September 30, 2021
The vast Everglades “River of Grass” is a subtropical wetland wilderness comprising a mosaic of watery sloughs, sawgrass prairies and tree islands in the freshwater marshes, and mangrove swamps, coastal lakes, and open-water bays along the estuarine coast. In a marriage of art and science, this collection of photographs by wildlife ecologist and photographer Dr. Mark Cook is witness to the rapid transformations that occurred after record-breaking seasonal rainfall flooded the River of Grass and sent freshwater once again flowing south into Florida Bay.
Exhibit Dates: August 6–September 17, 2021
HORIZONS, a retrospective exhibition, will feature the works and careers of artists Jim Houser and Dan Mackin – both long time Hobe Sound residents. The exhibit will open with a reception on Friday, August 6th from 5:30–7PM and will continue through September 17, 2021, at the Court House Cultural Center Gallery in downtown Stuart, FL.
Each year the Arts Council presents the Marvin S. Cone Annual High School Juried Art Show to recognize the artistic talents of Martin County high school students. The art teachers at each school select each piece of artwork for entry in the exhibit. It is a highly competitive process; the categories for cash awards are photography, painting, sculpture, mixed media/assemblage, printmaking, and drawing. The awards reception is held at the Court House Cultural Center Gallery. Additionally, each high school principal and the school superintendent select pieces to purchase that become a part of a permanent collection at their respective high schools and the superintendent's office.

The rugged and remote beauty of the Everglades is captured in these works which span over three decades of foraging into dense swampland. Delicate ecosystems, rare botanical specimens, and sweeping landscapes bring the wonder of this mysterious part of our country to light. The beauty of the Everglades is celebrated in the monumental photographs of Clyde Butcher. The scale, extraordinary clarity and tonal range set his photographs apart as exceptional works of art, earning him recognition as the foremost landscape photographer in America today. These powerful black and white images are portraits of the eternal bond between man and nature that is the soul of the Everglades. From the deepest cypress strands of the sawgrass prairies, coastal waters, and languid estuaries, to pinpoint still-lives of rare species, Clyde reveals its ecosystems in magnificent detail. He makes an unquestionable case for why we should care about its future.
